Modern Design Is Anything but Elementary
When it comes to educational facilities, great design does more than protect a building, it shapes the experience inside it. Bedford Elementary School is a powerful example of how thoughtful material selection, long‑term performance, and architectural vision can come together to create an inspiring place to learn.
Designed by Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects for Baltimore County Public Schools, Bedford Elementary School blends modern aesthetics with durable, high‑performance building systems. From its striking exterior to its carefully engineered roofing solutions, every element of the project was selected with longevity, efficiency, and visual impact in mind.
Built to Perform from the Top Down
At the heart of the building’s performance is its roofing system, an essential component for protecting both the structure and the students inside. Cole Roofing expertly installed a 61,500‑square‑foot Tremco 30‑year warranted Built‑Up Roofing (BUR) system.
This combination delivers proven durability, weather resistance, and long‑term reliability, critical qualities for a public-school facility designed to serve the community for decades. By pairing time‑tested roofing systems with modern membrane technology, the project achieves both resilience and performance without compromising design intent.
A Modern Exterior That Makes a Statement
Beyond its roofing system, Bedford Elementary School stands out for its bold, contemporary exterior. The façade features a carefully curated mix of textures and finishes that elevate the building well beyond traditional school design.
Two‑tone Alucobond® ACM panels, manufactured by Architectural Metal Designs, create strong visual contrast while reinforcing clean architectural lines. Installed over SmartCi® Green Girt, the system enhances thermal performance while supporting the sleek exterior appearance.
Complementing the ACM panels are corrugated metal wall panels from Morin Corporation, adding depth and rhythm to the façade. Warmth is introduced through Longboard® wood‑grain metal soffits, offering the look of natural wood with the durability and low maintenance of metal, an ideal solution for an active educational environment.
A custom radius entrance canopy fascia and trim anchors the design, creating a welcoming focal point that reflects the school’s modern identity while guiding students, staff, and visitors inside.
Designed for Longevity, Inspired by Learning
Every material and system at Bedford Elementary School was chosen with purpose. The result is a building that not only meets the functional demands of a high‑use educational facility but also inspires pride and engagement within the community it serves.
From its durable roofing system to its thoughtfully layered exterior materials, the project demonstrates how performance‑driven construction and architectural creativity can work hand in hand. It’s a school designed to endure, both structurally and aesthetically, while providing an environment where students can thrive.
